Labor Laws

Know Your Rights! Don't Get Taken Advantage Of!!!

url-6.jpgIt is very important to know the labor laws that are governing the State of which you live in and protect yourself. This is especially true if you are non-union, working freelance, or working on non-union projects.

The laws vary from state to state but most freelance artists are considered to be sub-contract workers. Meaning the terms of payment are based upon the terms of the contract between you and the person who hired you. This means that you must have in writing:

  • Payment amount
  • Agreed payment turn around times
  • Overtime
  • Kit fee
  • Travel reimbursement
  • Or even just the work for trade that was agreed upon

In some states, without a signed agreement, they can take as long as they want to pay you unless you have the payment turn around time in writing. Always know your rights and get a signed
deal memo.
