A passion for hair is nothing new to Lara Cilento. As she grew from a young child playing endlessly with her Barbie’s hair to a teen searching for her career calling, she began exploring her options to follow her passion once she reached high school. While her high school peers spent the majority of their day in history and science, Lara went to class in the morning and worked diligently to receive her cosmetology license in the afternoon.
While attending Monroe Community College in New York to pursue her other love, photography, Lara received an associate’s degree and transferred to Ithaca College. Studying visual scenery for film and theater, Lara began working in the theater department designing and styling each wig used in various productions.
After college, Lara continued to work with hair. She spent 5 years working in a salon, and she also found work as a wig master for local theaters and off Broadway productions in the New York area. She also spent time as a wardrobe supervisor for Tony award-winning choreographer, Garth Fagan Dance.
In 2005, Lara made the move from New York to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the beauty industry of film, television and photography. Lara spent time as a freelance hairstylist and make-up artist for independent shorts and feature films such as Hamill, Good Dick, and Vicious Circle. She also took a year-long hiatus to work as a wig master on the national tour of CATS. She also would return to New York during the holidays to work on “South Pacific” on Broadway.
Lara currently splits her time between Los Angeles and New York, building her own roster of clients and assisting top celebrity hair stylists. Her passion and dedication to her craft has allowed her to become one of the most requested assistants among hairstylists such as Mark Townsend, John D.
