It wasn't all that long ago when Hollywood was run by the old studio system. The studio system was a means of film production and distribution dominant in Hollywood from the early 1920s through the early 1960s.  Actors were under exclusive contract with studios and often traded with rival studios for a role in a feature. In fact, Shirley Temple was originally considered for the role of Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz". Unfortunately, the young actress had contractual obligations to Twentieth Century Fox. MGM arranged to exchange their contracted actors Clark Gable and Jean Harlow, but the arrangements fell through with Ms. Harlow's death. The term studio system refers to the practice of large motion picture studios producing movies primarily on their own filmmaking lots with not only actors but creative personnel under often long-term contract (including hair & makeup artists)....

When I first started out working as a Makeup Artist my first portfolio case was a three ring binder. At the time, I was still working in a small market "in Virginia", so my binder from the local office store seemed to work just find for me. Several years later, when I moved to Los Angeles I realized the three ring binder was not going to work in the big city, so I went to the local arts and crafts store and bought a prefabricated portfolio. At first the portfolio seemed to work out well, but as time went on the pages began to wear. Some of the portfolio pages got scratches and others began to warp. The most frustrating part was that the outside of it was still in good condition, but the interior pages were not removable.
